Auditions

Auditions are held annually for Years 7 and 11 for the following year.

To enrol in the Performing Arts stream at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, applicants must be successful at audition.

ALL audition applicants (Year 6 into 7 and Year 10 into Year 11) must apply using the Online Audition Application Form on the school’s website. On that form, applicants are to upload Profile and Audition videos, a photo and school reports. Applicants may wish to start preparing our requirements during January to have ready to be uploaded once Online Audition Applications open in 2024.

Online audition application registrations for entry into Year 7 or Year 11 2025 close at 5:00pm on Wednesday 1 May 2024. All documents and videos must be uploaded and submitted along with payment by this date.

No further audition registrations will be accepted after the closing date.

NB: As all applications are checked for clarity before panel review it is advisable that you do not leave your application submission to the last minute. Early submissions will allow for any issues to be rectified. It is advisable not to leave submissions to the last date.

Who can apply for an audition?

To be eligible to apply, applicants must be Australian Citizens or holders of a visa granting 'Permanent Resident Status' in Australia.

Applicants can audition in one or two of the three performing arts disciplines (Dance, Drama and Music) offered at our school.

Audition Conditions

Due to the large number of applicants who audition each year, the following conditions apply:

  1. Each audition is assessed on its own merits.
  2. The examiner's decision is final and no appeal can be made except on procedure.
  3. Information on an individual applicant's performance in their audition will not be provided.

Audition Process

ROUND 1: Online Video/s Audition

ROUND 2: Students who are successful in the Round 1 online audition will be invited to a live workshop audition for Round 2. Specific dates will be allocated by the school to each student for each discipline workshop between Weeks 9 and 10 in Term 2 2024. This will be communicated to parents/carers in a timely manner. Please ensure you will be available for this date window as reschedules are NOT possible.

Requirements

It is important to read all the information before you begin your application and ensure that you have all the required videos along with the following documents ready to be uploaded with the application:

  1. Profile Video (preferred file format MP4 which most devices record to)
  2. Performance Video/s
  3. Applicant's Photo (head and shoulder e.g. similar to passport photo) uploaded as a .jpeg
  4. Most recent School Report (Semester 2 2023 Report) or Semester 1 2024 (if available)
  5. Other document/s related to Special Provisions (only if applicable)

Profile Video

This is a brief introduction (approximately 1-2 minutes) to assist the audition panel to get to know the applicant.

Performance Video/s

Performance video/s will need to be uploaded separately based on whether you have chosen to apply for one or two audition disciplines.

A confirmation email will be sent once the audition application has been submitted with all videos, photo and documents uploaded correctly and below audition application fee being paid.

  • $50 for one audition preference
  • $100 for two audition preferences

Should your child be successful in the First Round of Video Auditions, you will be contacted by email mid Term 2 with the date and time of your Second Round LIVE Audition which take place in the last 2 weeks of Term 2, 2024. All results will be emailed in Week 1 of Term 3, 2024.

Round 2

Second Round Live Audition Process

This section is only relevant if your child has progressed from the First Round Video Audition into the Round 2.

Should your child be successful in the First Round of Video Auditions, you will be contacted by email mid Term 2 with the date and time of your Second Round LIVE Audition which will take place in the last 2 weeks of Term 2, 2024. All results will be emailed in Week 1 of Term 3, 2024.

Audition

On the day of audition, applicants will register at the Studio Theatre, Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, Newman Street, Newtown and escorted as a group to their audition workshop which will take approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.

Dance applicants only should be dressed in the same attire as worn in their audition video.

Music applicants should also bring their own instruments unless auditioning on piano or drum kit or percussion (including mallet percussion and auxiliary percussion). Electric guitarists and bass guitarists should bring their own lead. Percussionists and drum kit players should bring their own mallets and drumsticks.

Music applicants should prepare a different 2-minute music item from that submitted in Round 1.

Drama applicants may wear comfortable attire.

Following the audition, applicants are to be collected from the Studio Theatre, Newman Street, Newtown.

Offers

Offers for a placement in either Dance, Drama or Music in Year 7 or Year 11 2025 will be emailed early in Term 3 2024.
